Current account deficit $3.8 billion for the June 2026 quarter – news story
16 September 2026
New Zealand’s seasonally adjusted current account deficit was $3.8 billion in the June 2026 quarter, $666 million narrower than in the March 2026 quarter, according to figures released by Stats NZ today.
A $712 million narrowing in the primary income balance deficit was the main contributor to the narrowing of New Zealand’s current account deficit in the June 2026 quarter.
“The primary income deficit is the difference between the income New Zealand earns from its investments overseas and the outflow of income from foreign investment in New Zealand,” international accounts spokesperson Shanna Dilworth said.
The goods deficit balance widened by $416 million in the June 2026 quarter. The services balance changed by $300 million from a deficit in the March 2026 quarter to a surplus in the June 2026 quarter.
