National population estimates: At 30 June 2026 – information release

National population estimates give the best available measure of the population, by age and sex, usually living in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Key facts
At 30 June 2026, provisional estimates show:

  • the estimated resident population of Aotearoa New Zealand was 5,357,300
  • there were 2,699,500 females and 2,657,800 males
  • the median age of females and males was 39.3 and 37.8 years respectively.

Over the last year (ending June 2026), provisional estimates show:

  • New Zealand’s population grew by 36,400 (0.7 percent)
  • estimated natural increase (births minus deaths) was 18,700 (52 percent of total growth)
  • estimated natural increase was the lowest increase since the early 1940s, during World War II
  • estimated net migration (migrant arrivals minus migrant departures) was 17,600 (48 percent of total growth).

Over the last quarter (three months ending June 2026), provisional estimates show:

  • New Zealand’s population grew by 5,400 (0.1 percent)
  • estimated natural increase (births minus deaths) was 4,000
  • estimated net migration (migrant arrivals minus migrant departures) was 1,500.
