National population estimates give the best available measure of the population, by age and sex, usually living in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Key facts
At 30 June 2026, provisional estimates show:
- the estimated resident population of Aotearoa New Zealand was 5,357,300
- there were 2,699,500 females and 2,657,800 males
- the median age of females and males was 39.3 and 37.8 years respectively.
Over the last year (ending June 2026), provisional estimates show:
- New Zealand’s population grew by 36,400 (0.7 percent)
- estimated natural increase (births minus deaths) was 18,700 (52 percent of total growth)
- estimated natural increase was the lowest increase since the early 1940s, during World War II
- estimated net migration (migrant arrivals minus migrant departures) was 17,600 (48 percent of total growth).
Over the last quarter (three months ending June 2026), provisional estimates show:
- New Zealand’s population grew by 5,400 (0.1 percent)
- estimated natural increase (births minus deaths) was 4,000
- estimated net migration (migrant arrivals minus migrant departures) was 1,500.
